Gilded Age

Our products are carefully handcrafted utilizing old machinery and methods of construction which gives them a unique age old look and natural feel as well as imperfect and weathered appearance.  Extensive handwork and detailing compares our garments favorably to any in the marketplace.

In the process of creating our collection we are using some of the oldest machinery that is still used in industrial production as well as some of the oldest natural dyes known to man.  Volcanic Mud Dye, parchment, natural charcoal, tea, logwood, Japanese Alder and natural indigo are some of the dyes used in a  variety of of our products.

Natural indigo is perhaps the oldest dye known to man.  It was the original dye of all blue jeans manufactured in the beginning of XX century.  Since then almost all blue jeans are chemically dyes, using synthetic indigo.  The art of organic, natural indigo dying has almost disappeared.  There are very few companies in the world that making natural indigo jeans.  Gilded Age jeans are dyes with the color of the actual indigo plant.  The shade is distinctive and recognizable by its deeply hued appearance.  The process of making natural indigo jeans is time consumer, slower and more labor intensive than all methods used today.  It takes a lot of highly skilled hands taught over generations to use this process.

The art of hand knitting is one of the oldest and most practical ways of making clothes.  It is a completely natural and organic process which relies on the skills of an artisan to create an item of clothing with nothing more than a pair of needles and a ball of cashmere yarn.  This art of garment knitting has almost disappeared from today’s marketplace.  Nowadays there are few companies in the world that make hand knitted sweaters in a variety of gauges.  Gilded age sweaters are hand knitted with some of the infest MOngolian cashmere yearns and are renown for their compact, tight knitting and softness.  The process of hand knitting is time consumer, slower and more labor intensive than all machine knitting methods used today.  It takes  a lot of highly skilled hands to do this artisanal work.

Some of our garments are 100% organic clothing items created in the small artisanal natural dye studios.  They are produced according to the old ways of clothes-making, paying special attention to the authenticity of artisanal craft which is in full synch with nature and the environment.  In the spirit of years gone by, some knitted garment are knitted on “Hung Up” jersey machines which were a staple in knitting from the 1870’s to 1960’s.  There are very few machines in the world of this kind.  Those that sill operate are 30 times slower than regular knot machines.  Due to the machine’s characteristics, the fabric created on it has a unique softness and fullness that keeps the form much longer than the regular knits.  Not to mention, there are very few craftsman with the knowledge to operate these machines.
